Freedom to Read Week - Upholding Intellectual Freedom in Libraries, a Balancing Act
This discussion will be presented in French with simultaneous interpretation available in English.
Library and Archives Canada (LAC), in collaboration with Ottawa Public Library, invites you to mark Freedom to Read Week 2025. This annual campaign raises awareness about censorship and promotes access to books and magazines, bringing together readers, writers, publishers, schools, libraries, bookstores, universities, colleges, and other organizations across Canada.
Join Mathilde Barraband, Professor at the University of Quebec at Trois Rivières and Co-chair of the France-Québec Research Chair on Contemporary Issues of Freedom of Expression, for a thought-provoking conversation on safeguarding intellectual freedom in libraries. This discussion will take place at LAC and will be moderated by Catherine Lachaîne, Librarian at the University of Ottawa.
About
Libraries are the privileged guardians of intellectual freedom, championing the exchange of a wide range of ideas and information. However, this is a precarious exercise in many respects. Should all ideas and information be represented in libraries? Should everyone have access to everything? Mathilde Barraband invites us to reflect on the prominent role libraries play in our democracies and the complex challenge of curating and weeding their collections.
