Abstract
Systemic-constructivist couple therapy (SCCT) is effective in enhancing marital satisfaction in the course of therapy, maintained at a two-year follow-up. Change appears to follow the development of a shared sense of couple identity (labeled "we-ness"), which is facilitated through the use of interpersonal processing. The promise of this integrative therapy has prompted the present study's attempt to further specify the mechanisms of change in SCCT through the examination of a therapeutic intervention known as listening to understand. In addition to a test of the overall efficacy of the intervention in fostering greater relationship satisfaction through enhanced interpersonal processing, exploratory investigations of potential gender differences and moderating variables--alexithymia and psychological mindedness--were also undertaken. Results of a three-group randomized control trial suggested that listening to understand was an effective SCCT intervention, as it appears to actively enhance interpersonal processing; however, findings regarding gender differences and moderation were mixed.
