Abstract
The concept of living positively with chronic pain was explored in a mixed-methods study of ten women with various chronic pain conditions. The participants were interviewed in person with an open-ended question format to describe their experiences in developing a positive identity while contending with chronic pain. Information on pain severity, coping styles, and identity was gathered using the West Haven-Yale Multidimensional Pain Inventory and a Biographical Questionnaire. Phenomenological analysis of the interviews revealed a process consisting of three major categories: 'Before Diagnosis, Redefinition of Self,' and 'Moving Forward.' Within these stages are common themes that are divided into the minor categories of 'Inner World' and 'Outer World.' The outline of the process and themes are discussed and compared with previous findings.
