Abstract
Ontario relies on a set of guidelines for eleven metals, set by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) in the late 1970s, to protect agricultural land from metal contamination. However, concerns were raised about the lack of guidelines for other metals that may be present in biosolids. Tin and thallium concentrations in biosolids have not been determined. These metals need to be quantified in order to establish safe agricultural loading rates for biosolids. The quantifications of tin and thallium in this material, however, poses analytical difficulties because of the complexity of the matrix. EPA Method 3051 for digestion followed by quantification using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry has been modified for determinations of tin and thallium concentrations in samples of biosolids from Ontario Sewage Treatment Plants.
