Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of developing and implementing an Active Living program within the workplace, with the aim of improving the health and well-being of Canadian women, as well as increasing the competency level of 2nd year Recreation and Leisure Services' students. The study was conducted at a community college in south-eastern Ontario. Sixteen employees participated in the study, along with 11 2 nd year Recreation and Leisure Services' students. A partnership was developed between this diploma program and the college administration. The literature review provides a framework for the study by discussing women's issues, a rationale for physical activity programs in the workplace, motivational strategies, adult learning principles, and program evaluation. By designing and implementing an onsite employee fitness centre, I was able to validate the effectiveness of a national assessment tool, determine a variety of active living initiatives that were both motivating and successful in improving the overall health and well-being of the women, as well as teaching strategies that served to increase the competency and confidence level of the student trainers. A number of recommendations are made which may be useful to both adult educators in other community colleges, as well as adult educators interested in initiating a workplace health promotion program. One of the conclusions drawn from the study relates to the importance of adult learning principles in motivating individuals to get involved in learning activities, and also to continue with those activities. Finally, the study identified the importance of both formative and summative evaluation, as the accountability piece of the planning and implementation of programs.
