Abstract
This thesis is an analysis of the security concerns and the potential for stability in the Black Sea region, with specific emphasis upon the relations among the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Turkey. It begins with an examination of the foreign policy trends of these three states. It then proceeds to analyze the primary obstacles in the bilateral relationship between Russia and Ukraine, and between Russia and Turkey from 1991-1996. The military concerns in the region are discussed next, concentrating upon the concerns of Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. Finally, the economic potential of the Black Sea region is examined. The oil pipeline debate and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation are examined. The thesis concludes that in the short term, while there are numerous security concerns, namely over the BSF, the Caucasus, and the CFE treaty, in the long term the Black Sea region has the potential through regional cooperation to achieve economic prosperity.
