Abstract
This thesis reports a preliminary investigation of the punching strength of transversely prestressed bridge decks of composite I-beam bridges. The effect of transverse prestressing on compressive membrane action that would develop in such a system is studied. The slab panels of a three-girder model bridge, with a transversely prestressed 43 mm thick deck, were tested to failure under concentrated static loading. The model was constructed to approximately one-quarter scale. Experimental results are compared with results obtained from theoretical procedures which incorporate the effects of compressive membrane action. The test results show a very high safety factor against failure, as well as excellent performance of the slab panels under service loading. The compressive membrane action that develops in such a deck is shown to be enhanced considerably by the prestress force. It is also shown that transverse prestress improves the performance of the slab under service loading. The investigation indicates that a transversely prestressed deck can be an improved alternative to the current bridge design approach specified in the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code. Further research is recommended to ascertain the optimum levels of prestressing and span-thickness ratio of the slab. Tests to determine the performance of transversely prestressed deck slabs under dynamic loading and multiple static loads are also indicated.
