Abstract
A dichotomous-choice contingent valuation survey was used to estimate nonmarket use benefits accruing to wilderness canoeists in Ontario's Killarney, Quetico and Algonquin Parks. Dollar amounts were updated monthly, thereby improving the efficiency of willingness to pay (WTP) estimates. About 2,760 persons were surveyed and a response rate of 88% was achieved. For increased general trip expenditures as a payment vehicle, canoeists received estimated surplus benefits of $66.40 per person per day. A payment vehicle of an increase in the price of the Interior Camping Permit resulted in a WTP of \$26.38. Mean and median WTP estimates differed by less than 10%. Aggregated net benefits for canoeists in Quetico, Algonquin and Killarney Parks in 1993 were estimated as $8.1, \$15.6 and $1.8 million, respectively. The value for Quetico Park compared favourably with an estimate of \$8.3 million, as determined by a travel cost model using the same data.
