Abstract
Jacqueline Hookimaw-Witt challenges the conventionally held misunderstanding that aboriginal women are less powerful, or important, within indigenous societies than are men. To make her case, Dr. Hookimaw-Witt examines the Zapotec people of Mexico and the Cree people of Attawapiskat, Ontario in order to argue for a balanced understanding of gender roles and responsibility, rather than adhering to polar positions exemplified by the male vs. female power struggle epitomized within Western culture.
