Abstract
This thesis begins with a qualitative physical discussion of the arc furnace load during different operational phases, followed by a discussion on the modelling of an AC arc load. A review of existing schemes for reactive power compensation of a three-phase arc is then presented. Compensation can be accomplished by means of passive components, line commutated or self commutated VAR compensators and active filters. A measurement process by which better information about the arc may be obtained is established. Various approaches to providing active filtering are also introduced. The simplified analysis of a select set of active filters is presented. Finally a topology which might be of benefit in solving the unbalance power factor and harmonic problems is proposed. In summary, the main objectives of this thesis are two fold. The first objective is to provide some guidance as to how to model the dynamic arc. This implicitly assumes that an attempt be made to obtain information to improve our knowledge of the dynamic arc model. The second objective is to consider existing and new power circuit topologies which could address the harmonic problem, power factor problem and unbalance problem.
