Abstract
The use of a daily amino acid (AA) dialysate in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients may have benefits over the use of dextrose dialysate only. We measured subjective appetite and food intake, nitrogen balance and mood of CAPD patients. During the first 4 wks one group received dextrose dialysate only, and the second group received one AA dialysate exchange replacing the morning dextrose exchange. In the last 4 wks, conditions were reversed. Replacing the morning dextrose exchange with an AA exchange produced no adverse effects on feelings of hunger/satiety or food appeal, nor were there any effects on lunch-time food intake, 3-day food intake, nitrogen balance or mood. There was a reduction in feelings of fullness and stomach ache. Urea excretion was increased, consistent with increased AA absorption, during treatment with 4 weeks of morning AA exchange. I conclude that the use of a daily AA dialysate has no adverse effects on subjective appetite and food intake, nitrogen balance and mood of CAPD patients. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
