Abstract
This thesis presents original, wholistic, Aboriginal socialization as the foundation of literacy for the Aboriginal population. A definition representing the worldview and reality of Aboriginal society is offered to specifically meet the literacy needs of the Aboriginal community. Intergenerational trauma presented as the origin of several levels of underlying needs in the Aboriginal community clarifies the call for literacy training that will guide the individual to read their history and "read situations, social structures and social locations" to enable better access to mainstream institutions and to build success and identity. Literacy is discussed in the context of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University program, under which Native literacy practitioners have disclosed policy that does not represent Aboriginal stakeholders. This thesis is based on an extensive literature review, life experience, university studies and reflective teaching in the Aboriginal community over a thirty-five year period.
