Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to assess the acute effects of a sucrose preload on subjective measures of appetite and food intake in healthy, 9 and 10 year old children. Sucrose preloads were given in a 300 ml solution of cherry Koolaid, mid-morning on three separate test days. Each child served as his/her own control. Subjective appetite measures were taken throughout the morning. A buffet lunch was served and energy and macronutrient intake measured. In the first experiment, 18 children drank 300 ml of a 90g (360 kcal), 45g (180 kcal) and 0g (0 kcal) sucrose solution, 30 minutes before lunch. In the second experiment, 12 children consumed a 90g sucrose preload (360 kcal) at 90, 60 and 30 minutes before lunch. In the third experiment, 14 children consumed a 90g sucrose preload (360 kcal) 30 and 90 minutes before lunch and a 0g sucrose preload (0 kcal) 30 minutes before lunch. It is concluded that after consuming a sucrose preload, children report a decreased appetite, exhibit decreased food intake and compensate for preload calories when the preload is consumed closer to lunch.
