Abstract
This creative non-fiction thesis explores the complex relationships between three generations of women. Oma, my grandmother, is a natural storyteller, and her accounts of life on the Austro-Hungarian border before and during World War II form the backbone of the narrative. Oma's daughter Erika, my mother, keeps her memories private. To understand their histories--and my own--I am forced to negotiate the silences, the gaps in their narratives to determine when to let imagination fill in the details, when I must ask for them, when it is best to allow gaps to persist. As I explore topics such as childhood, school, immigration, love, war, death and grief, memory sparks the alignment of experience, vertically through the generations. The result is a narrative composed of fragments and leaps that form connective bridges across time, space, language--a process which mirrors the act of remembering.
