Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness on representative areas of the 1989 Environment Canada tri (n-butyl) tin (TBT) regulations which banned the use of TBT in antifouling paints used on boat hulls of vessels under 25 metres (82 feet). Specifically, the study examined whether the limited ban has decreased the endocrine disrupting effect "imposex" in marine neogastropods. Sampling of neogastopod 'Nucella spp'., mussel, and grab sediment at selected sites on Southern Vancouver Island was carried out between September and December 1999. The neogastropods ' Nucella emarginata, Nucella lameilosa, Nucella canaliculata, and Searlesia dira' were examined for indications of imposex. Mussels, ' Mytilus edulis' and 'Mytilus californianus' species, and surficial sediment samples were collected as indicators of the presence and bioavailability of organotins in the coastal environment of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. To further quantify the relationship between the TBT metabolite with the biological response, gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry was used to provide concentrations of nine organotin species [mono (n-butyl)-, di (n-butyl)-, tri (n-butyl)-, tetra (n-butyl)-, mono (n-phenyl)-, di (n-phenyl)-, tri (n-phenyl)-, di (n-cyclohexyl)-, tri (n-cyclohexyl)-] in composite samples.
